Things to Know
CLEANING SOLUTIONS
Packaged sterile saline is a gentle choice for piercing aftercare. Mixing your own sea salt solution is no longer a suggested practice. We strongly encourage you to use a sterile saline labeled for use as a wound wash. Contact lens saline, eye drops, and other saline products should never be used on a body piercing.
Your saline ingredients should list .09% sodium chloride as the only ingredient. Mixing your own sea salt solution will commonly result in the product being far too salty and strong, this can over dry the piercing and interfere with healing. Also avoid harsh cleansing solutions such as Bactine, Rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide.
We do sell saline solution/ wound wash in store for only $10.
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS FOR BODY PIERCINGS
How to Properly Care for Your New Piercing
Proper aftercare is essential to help your piercing heal safely, reduce irritation, and prevent infection. At Leap Then Look Tattoo, we provide professional piercings in Clarksville, TN using high-quality jewelry and sterile techniques—but healing depends on how you care for it at home.
Follow these simple piercing aftercare steps to keep your piercing clean and healing beautifully.
1. Wash Your Hands Before Touching Your Piercing
Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before touching or cleaning your piercing.
This is one of the most important steps in preventing bacteria from transferring to the area and causing irritation or infection.
2. Do Not Remove Your Jewelry
Do not remove your jewelry during the healing process.
Removing jewelry too early can:
-
Cause the piercing to close quickly
-
Trap bacteria inside
-
Lead to irritation or infection
Keep your jewelry in place until a professional piercer confirms your piercing is fully healed.
3. Clean Your Piercing with Saline Solution
To properly clean your piercing, use a sterile saline solution.
-
Gently mist or spray the front and back of the piercing
-
Allow the saline to fully saturate the area
-
Clean twice daily during the healing process
Avoid using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh cleansers. These products can dry out the skin and delay healing.
4. Allow Your Piercing to Air Dry
After cleaning, allow your piercing to air dry or gently pat dry with clean, disposable paper products.
Avoid using cloth towels, as they can carry bacteria and irritate the piercing.
What NOT to Do During Healing
To prevent irritation and promote proper healing:
-
Do not twist or turn your jewelry
-
Do not touch your piercing unnecessarily
-
Do not use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh chemicals
-
Avoid sleeping directly on fresh piercings when possible

WHAT IS NORMAL?
Initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, or bruising.
During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals.
Once healed: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing; do not force it. If you fail to include cleaning your piercing as part of your daily hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may accumulate.
A piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. This is because tissue heals from the outside in, and although it feels fine, the interior remains fragile. Be patient, and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
Even healed piercings can shrink or close in minutes after having been there for years! This varies from person to person; if you like your piercing, keep jewelry in—do not leave it empty.
